To make the star I have used the flying geese method, the sizes of the pieces used are larger than if you were to use the traditional method. Most people recommend adding an extra 7/8 of an inch to the finished size of a triangle but I normally add an extra inch, by doing this I find it easier to trim the excess down to size than find the finished size is just under the required size.
2. Take a piece 2 and score a line across the diagonal to mark the cutting line.
A 1/4 of an inch on each side of this centre line score lines that will be the seam line.
Figure 1. Mark all 4 piece 2’s.
3.Place 2 of the piece 2’s diagonally on the piece 1, match the scored lines
to each other. The piece 2’s will over lap slightly. Figure 2.
4.Sew down both of the seam lines . Figure 3.
5.Cut down the centre line into two halves. Figure 4.
6. Flip the triangles up and press. Figure 5.
7. Place
another piece 3 in the corner of one of the halves.
Sew down the two seam lines. Figure 6.
8. Cut along the centre cutting line. Figure 8.
9. Press the triangles open. Figure 9.
10. This finished flying goose may need trimming down to the correct size for this
block the correct size is 5.5” x 3”, this includes the seam allowance. Figure 9. Unit 1.
This gives you two flying geese units. Repeat step 7 with the other halve this will give you four flying geese units.
11. To each side of the piece 4 add one of the unit 1’s. Figure 10. Unit 2.
12. Add a piece 1 to each side of a unit 1. Figure 11. Unit 3.
13. Add a unit 3 to the top and bottom of unit 2. Figure 12.
